As athletes and health enthusiasts scientifically grounded in logic we often don’t think about our spiritual connection with food. If we are working hard at gaining muscle we have a formula. 1-1.5 grams of protein per pound, drink lots of water for the kidneys, stay in a positive nitrogen balance with leafy greens, 75-100g of carbs on a low day and 200-250g of carbs on a high day… Sound familiar?
We have the perfect plan for the perfect functional body on paper, but then something happens. Life happens… Emotions happen, external stimuli happens, immediate foods happen to parallel our fast paced lives. We then research more reasons why we should eat this and not that, personifying specific foods granting them the ability to be positive or negative sources of reinforcement in our lives.
What if I told you to stop thinking about processed foods, high fat foods, and high sugar foods as terrible enemies you’re fighting a war against. What if I told you to stop resenting their monopoly on supermarket shelves and viewing yourself as a powerless person defeated by addiction if you happen to consume something that isn’t on your ‘approved food list.’
In an effort to be low carb, paleo, vegan [insert your favorite paradigm here] the world can begin to look black and white. What if food was approached from a position of non-judgement? Once the obsession to be perfect is lifted and fear of forbidden foods subsides then intuition has the ability to be heard. It’s that small feeling inside that will alert you to what your body truly needs. Perhaps you’re craving apricots because you’re low on potassium, or maybe you need extra protein from a source your intuition will disclose; be it a plant or animal. Only when we come from a place of non-judgement are we truly centered to choose foods that are empowering and energizing towards our health and our goals.
Simple, but not always easy.
